I know that this is a year behind, but I listened this morning and have some thoughts that seem important to share…

First of all, I want to say that you pose some important questions. It is refreshing to hear that someone actually looked to see who was involved in creating the 21st Century Skills Consortium instead of just repeating the conclusions like they MUST be true.

Lately though, I have been coming to the conclusion that there is some truth to the idea that our educational system really needs to be changed partly because of what is happening with technology. Have you read “A Whole New Mind” by Daniel Pink? I really do think that he is onto something important when he talks about the right brain skills in our world today. Thinking outside of the box, creativity, mashing up different things than you would imagine going together, doing things in a different way… these are SUCH different ways of doing things than I learned in school. I am 53 and probably had a similar education as you did. My theory is that those of us who were pretty successful at school became teachers. We really liked school and learning and were successful at it. Our right brained friends dropped out or went into other things and were not so successful at school. They were glad to get out.

Anyway, I am a Campus Technology Coordinator in Austin, Texas who is trying to figure out how all of the changes with technology actually connect to the REAL classroom. I listen to lots of podcasts on my drive to and from school. I know that the one I just listened to was from a year ago, but I have some suggestions. Even though you bring up some good questions you seem to argue with yourself too much… You often say, “I shouldn’t say that” or “I am going too far with that”. It is not easy to listen to one person rambling on with their own thoughts and thought processes. It would be GREAT if you would have a talking partner to bounce your good thoughts off of.

    Just my 2 cents,

    Janice

p.s. I am also from Northern California (San Rafael) and I have a mennonite connection to Goshen!
